2019 Anime Genre Statistics

Honestly, this was spurred out of a desire to see how much ‘Detective’ anime has slowly climbed in priority. And, while it certainly has climbed, the numbers are very disappointing actually. It was not quite as big as I’d’ve imagined. However, I always wanted to calculate how much more school anime was being made vs… Well, the rest. I want everyone to keep a few things in mind: This is only THIS year. A year which I considered to be actually pretty decent in the diversity department. But also a certain stat is a little over-inflated. ‘Others’ include light-novel anime, certain romcoms and children’s anime. There was much fewer anime which were made with a unique enough appeal than the stat would otherwise suggest. Although, you could toss detective anime in there. The only reason I singled-out detective anime was, again, my own curiosity. Anyways, here are the stats:

So, i’m just gonna quickly clarify that some people might look at this and think “Oh! Well, that isn’t that bad”! ” There’s not THAT much more school anime”. This is a yearly statistic that maintains itself consistently… Every year. Probably to greater proportions, as well. Like I said, I felt this was a GOOD year for diversities’ sake. And a good year for ‘quality’ anime as well. But that’s still a huge number considering it adds upon the percentage rating every year. Every year you get 60+ more school anime. That’s insane! That’s absolutely insane!

Anyways, another interesting stat: Only 11 Isekai (Otherworld) anime. Maybe the following years the numbers were higher but I doubt it was that much higher. Especially since Isekai is a fairly recent trend. I did assume it would only get more popular but seeing as they’re actually not doing that incredibly well and it’s barely even taken off it’s more likely they’ll die out actually. Probably within the next year, even. But it does go to show that just because the most popular anime tend to be 1 or 2 of a certain kind; it doesn’t mean they’re that abundant. It just means studios were very selective.

So, detective anime. I thought it was very freakin’ strange that we suddenly got 4 detective anime this season… Aaaand while it was a bit weird it was probably coincidental. There was hardly much more detective anime in the previous seasons at all. And, if I had to guess, this won’t be a trend coming into 2020 since they’re not doing too well. Even Psycho-Pass 3 has a lower-than-expected rating on MAL. Bit of a bummer. I’m not a huge fan of detective anime but I am a fan of anything different and I think detective anime could’ve brought some perspective.

I don’t think there’s anything we can really do about ‘Game’ anime. They’re either card game anime or promotional anime. To my memory there’s only 1 game anime that came out this year that received an above 8.0 score on MAL. I could be quite wrong there. Although, I doubt I am too wrong. At the very least, I don’t believe it can get much worse.

Let me know what you think about this. I’m curious about 2018’s stats as well so maybe if there’s a demand for this I’ll do that. I haven’t really been focused too much on anime but that’s because I’ve been working on other things that, who knows, maybe I’ll introduce to the blog at some point. Thanks for reading. Watch Beastars!

    1. I’m curious as well to know exactly what the numbers are. If nobody else does it(unlikely) by the time I get around to it as soon as I get time.
